Themed Environments

Here are a couple of recent environment shots I did for a client. They each ended up being about 30"x15" at 200dpi. I'm not 100% on the hours for each because they were done back to back over the course of a few days. I'd estimate 12 to 15 hours each.

Grimm Kart Kaos - Character Renderings

Here are a pair of character renderings I did for Grimm Kart Kaos, Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White respectively.

Saints Row - Step by Step Ghetto

Here is a rough estimation of how I go about painting buildings in Photoshop. We're missing about 1 and a half steps since I'm working backwards through layers rather than the real process.

The real first step includes a 3D rough of what I'm painting. They're just box compositions with elevations marked every 11 feet so I can make an educated guess at where the doors and windows go. I then trace those boxes to determine perspective lines. Once that is done I mask off large faces of buildings and block in color. What's marked as step 2 below is as close as I can get because I flattened a few layers of shadows and windows onto those color blocks...

1.) Using the line tool I traced the boxes that made up the buildings.
2.) I masked off individual faces of the buildings. Originally the windows were not there.

3.) Bricks, bricks, bricks. Some texture too but mostly just bricks.
4.) This is when the windows were originally added.

5.) Details - lamp posts, shadows, wires, road, signs, etc.

Saints Row - Building Concept

The first 2 images will give you a bit of insight to the process. Each building has been roughed out. I then go in and do a paint over. Once the concept is finished it gets sent out to who ever has been hired for outsourcing. The last picture in the group is a theme piece. It had some 3D work underneath for accurate perspective but it wasn't as detailed as the previous ones.

Environmental concepts for Plus and Minus : A Child's Tale. The first image shows Minus using his toy T-Rex to cast a shadow to scare away the bad guy.

These images are from the character development for Minus. You can see how he evolves a bit. The first couple of renderings have the completely sunken eyes, which make him look a bit too old. Once the sunken eyes turned into a graphic feature he fell back into the age range we were shooting for.

Mitsubishi Studio - Mitsubishi Warthog

These images are from the automotive studio sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors. From the beginning of the project the objective was to make a "cross-over" vehicle - a hybrid between a car and an SUV. These sketches are from the mid-point of the project and the renderings are of the final design.

GM Studio - Cadillac Raptor

These 3 renderings were done for a sponsored studio with GM. It was a blue sky project that started off as a Corvette (red) but evolved into a mid-engine Cadillac (blue, yellow) over the course of 10 weeks.

Hasbro - Betrayal at House on the Hill

These 4 images are part of a series of 70 tiles done for the board game Betrayal at House on the Hill. The 70 tiles were done over a 9 week period during my co-op with Hasbro Games R&D department.
